This is an ingenious concept---a miniature manual drip "coffeemaker" for one cup. I saw this in my local grocery store for , and I thought, "Why not give it a try?" I'm really glad I did. It makes a great single cup of coffee, so it's convenient to take to work or to keep on hand if you just want one cup of coffee. Also, it's so small that it's easy to store it. Some tips to keep in mind as you make a cup of coffee:

1) A course grind doesn't work as well with this. If you use a course grind, your coffee will be weak. I have a burr grinder and use a medium/fine grind. It's perfect.

2) The perfect tempature for coffee is somewhere around 206 degrees. I don't bother with a thermometer, but I just bring about 1 1/2 cups of water to boil in the microwave (using a Pyrex cup). I let it boil, and then just let it rest for about 30 seconds or so.

3) Pour enough water in to cover the grinds. You'll see it foam up at the top (if your coffee is fresh). Let that water flow through. This initial "soaking" of the grinds is important to extracting the flavor.

4) Finally, just pour the remaining water through (or however much you need to fill your coffee cup). The slower you pour, the stronger the coffee.

It sounds complicated, but believe me, it was really quick--quicker than making a cup of coffee in an automatic drip coffeemaker.

It's rare to find something that is cheap and works great, but this is just such a product.

I love having a simple, easily-cleaned, non-electronic way to get that one perfect cup of coffee in the morning. Because I can make it exactly as I like it, and in whatever amount suits me that day, I can get my coffee satisfaction for the day in one cup. The mug that comes with it is attractive but broke when I set it down. No matter, the cone goes over any mug. It was simple and affordable and does the job. I feel like I have my own Starbucks.

And I can use any kind of coffee, don't have to buy "pods", and the filters are readily available at the supermarket. And I just dump, rinse, and am ready for the next day. Such a simple thing, and such a great solution for me.

We've had one of these for years and it's perfect for making one cup of coffee at a time. The pot really only works best if you make a full pot (which encourages a one-cup-a-day drinker to be a one-pot-a-day drinker) and the french press was a bit of a pain to clean. Our original made excellent coffee (probably aided by the fact that it was very simple to clean). Also, it's great for camping - it's easy to carry with you + makes (great) coffee anywhere that you have boiling water.

Costs less, less packaging/resources needed to make it, lasts forever, can make great coffee almost anywhere? That's a five-star product!

Unfortunately, we recently had to get a new one (lost the old one) and this design looks great, but the hole the coffee drips through is larger, so the coffee is weaker. Well, unless you use more coffee - we had been using a standard 2TBSP scoop to make a cup in the old one, this one requires almost 2 of those scoops to come close to the same strength of coffee.

This design does look much more modern, and it is nice to see how full the cup is without having to lift the filter off.

This cone is useful if all you want is one cup of ground coffee, and don't want to deal with the hassle of a coffee machine.

One of the attractive features of this cone is that it has a little window in which you can see the coffee drip into the cup. Just put your ground coffee into a #2 filter, put the filter into the cone, and add boiling water to the cone. You will have to add hot water several times (about 3 times) as the coffee will take a while to empty into the cup.

Personally, I prefer to extract more flavor from the ground coffee, so I put the coffee into another cup and add boiling water to it, and let that sit for about 3 minutes before pouring it into the cone + filter.

Good for filling travel mugs and just large coffee mugs. There don't seem to be many of this type of coffee maker at this price. I'm very pleased with this product.

Since I am the only one in the house that drinks coffee and I only drink one cup a day, I was very exited when this dual cup coffee maker arrived. Unfortunately, I was dissapointed every step of the way after I opened the box.

First, the unit is quite flimsy. It is made of cheap plastic and wobbles on the counter top. Everything on this thing feels cheap. The selector switch to make 1 or 2 cups doesn't quite click into place and feels like it has a good chance of breaking.

Second, and most importantly, the unit and cups have a rubbery smell. I washed everything in soapy water and then washed the cups and lids in the dishwasher hoping that the smell would go away.

I was looking forward to my first cup of coffee, but I just couldn't get over the smell and taste. It was like I was drinking from a tire.

Third, when I took my first sip, coffee dribble out from between the cup and the cap. I had to remove the cap so I wouldn't have coffee all over me and my chair.

Needless to say, I'm sending it back on Monday. Very disapointing.

All i know this little gadget saved my family time and counter space in my house. Over all i am very happy with this product. the only issue is to coffee mug covers they are very loose.

I was skeptical because of the price, but this is wonderful for when you just want a couple of cups of coffee. It makes terrific tasting coffee and is backed by a great name. It is just a simple pot, nothing frilly, perfect. It is small, looks great on the counter. I would highly recommend it.

I totally agree with the reviewer who said it's trash but for a different reason. The pod holder is my issue. It's not even the right size/shape to hold the pod snugly. What ends up happening is that the water runs around the pod instead of through it. The coffee it "brews" doesn't even smell like coffee - imagine how it tastes! I tried using two pods to see if that worked and what a mess. Water was all over the place. This thing doesn't even deserve the one star rating I had to give it. I wish Amazon would allow zero stars as a rating.

I really wanted to like this product. It was a great fit on my counter without being in the way. Cuisinart is a good brand and I love the pots and pans that I've had for many years. I learned my lesson!

Please, please save the money and put it toward a brewer that works the way they're it's supposed to!

TRASH - A. Help - San Diego
For those of you who were looking for a Senseo machine alternative (e.g., when the real one is out of stock at Amazon...the reason why I tried this, after a zillion great cups mine finally died): DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK.

This is NOT a pressurized Espresso Machine, it is a miniature drip-style "Mr. Coffee" (except much worse) with 8 oz reservoir that makes colored water...you would do much better plopping a few pods (at considerable expense) into any Mr. Coffee machine, at least it has room for the water to sit with the coffee as it drips out.

There is no "Zero-Star" category...I would have returned it but it was not worth the bother. I cannot understand why anyone would actually like this machine unless they were used to and looking for colored water called "coffee" and did not mind wasting expensive pods in making it. The one I bought now resides in a landfill.

To advertise this machine as a "commercial coffee machine" is worth a lawsuit!

I bought this coffee maker over a year ago after reading many different reviews. A lot of people liked the taste of the coffee brewed in the Melitta MEMB1B Mill & Brew, but the construction sounded cheap, so I decided to try this one. Overall I have been very pleased! It makes a great tasting coffee which in my opinion is most important! That's why I gave it five stars. I feel spoiled with that fresh ground cofee taste! It is a little time consuming to wash out the filter & there is a little buildup of coffee ground residue in the filter so I gave four stars for the construction. It took time, made a mess & extra room on my counter to grind my coffee in a separate grinder so overall I like the all in one better! This coffee pot keeps my coffee very hot for almost 2 hours. Unlike some of the other reviews, I actually love the LCD screen with the weather... I have two kids and a very busy schedule so it is quick & easy to check the screen while I get my cup of coffee to help them know how to dress for school or how to plan our summer days! Still working great, but I would definitely buy another one when the time comes!

OK, in fairness, I bumped this rating up from one star to two since it brewed a great pot of coffee while I was in the shower.

But this required several convoluted steps and extra minutes -- I had to unplug the unit and plug it in again after the blue LCD screen blanked out (this occurs frequently), then wait for several minutes while the machine synchronized the correct time and weather forecast.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to circumvent this several minute process and just get to the main function of brewing coffee. It's almost as if Melita designed the coffee brewing function as an afterthought to the weather forecast, barometric pressure reading and a sleeping cat that pops on the screen when the unit is inactive.

In addition to the highly anti-intuitive operation, the buttons on the unit function as if they were crafted in a sub-standard 1970's Taiwanese factory -- push a button and you get a result about half the time! This includes pushing the "on" button for it to start grinding and brewing.

I often wind up setting a timer to activate brewing within two minutes when the on button ignores me.

Annoying!

I envision this unit going curbside in the not too distant future.

We've had the Smart Mill & Brew for over a year. My husband purchased it, and now that I'm searching for replacement baskets and seeing how much the darn thing cost in the first place ... he's in trouble. We love the coffee it makes, but within a few months we had to replace the carafe because the cheap plastic lid broke. He called the manufacturer for a replacement. We had a black machine, they only had white replacement carafe, so they gave us free shipping. Now the filter material on the basket is pulling loose, so in searching for that replacement I find the product is no longer manufactured, and I can't find a basket for it. It's worked for much longer than some other purchasers' machines, but not being able to find parts for it is annoying. And the weather station is an absolute joke. Another reviewer said it ... look out the window. This review is probably a waste of time since the particular product is no longer manufactured, but I'd be wary of buying another Melitta product just because their customer service is hinky at best.

I drink one or two cups of coffee a day and got tired of wasting coffee with my coffee maker. My coffee is fresh, therefore tastes better and has more of coffee's antioxidants (good for the liver). I use very hot water so, in contrast to another reviewer, I don't end up with a cold cup of coffee. It doesn't wobble on the cup and isn't warped because I didn't run it through the dishwasher (thanks for the head's up). I just rinse it out and set it on the same spot everyday (saves space because it is small.) It doesn't take long at all to make a cup of coffee. I buy about ten day's worth of coffee at a time, ground to espresso "fine" grind at the grocery store, and it tastes fresh the whole time. If you want to find out more, check out my public list. Wow this little hunk of plastic really does a great job of making one cup of coffee. I usually get the paper coffee cups with the lids and make it at home myself and I get the big 20oz cups so I can merely adjust the amount of coffee for my insane caffeine fix. I wish however it was made of a type of metal or glass rather than plastic for I feel I am slowly on the road to growing another arm due to the hot water slowly administering plastic chemicals into my body with each delicious cup of coffee. Also let's not fail to mention that professional machines in coffee shops use metal in their filter thingys. I would pay for a metal version of these.

I don't drink coffee, but my husband does. I make his coffee one cup at a time, using a plastic cone and permanent filter placed directly over his coffee cup. However, I needed a larger coffee maker to use when we have visitors so I would not have to make one cup at a time. We never have too many guests, and I prefer brewing coffee (and tea, for me) manually, so I was happy to find this coffee maker. It's just what I was looking for. As for clean-up, all parts are top-rack dishwasher safe. This product is made in Canada. The only negative is that it didn't come with a permanent filter. I purchased one separately, though, so all is well.

I almost bought the larger 10-cup model, but changed my mind when I discovered that it uses the harder-to-find #6 filters. Also, the smaller model doesn't take up too much storage room in my kitchen cabinet.

After reading some poor reviews from people who ordered this product from Ambient Weather, I ordered mine from Joe Muscle. The coffee maker arrived quickly; well packaged and undamaged.

Overall, I'd say this is a good product for the money. Yes, I could get a small electric coffee maker at Wally World for about , but this manual coffee maker will undoubtedly last a lot longer. Also, according to what I've been told, manual coffee makers make better-tasting coffee.

This Melitta coffeemaker does exactly what it's designed and advertised to do. However, after it arrived and I've had a chance to use it a couple of times, I've realized my regular coffeemaker is faster and more convenient. I bought the Melitta to use when I wanted just a cup or two. I thought it would be quicker and less clean up than using my regular drip coffee maker but that's not the case.
With the Melitta you have to heat the water in a separate container and stand there while you pour the heated water in the cone as it brews. With my regular coffeemaker I just pour the water in using the carafe and turn it on. I also think it taste better from the regular drip coffee maker.
Still it's a good buy for the price and I think it's good to have around as a spare coffeemaker.

Comes with a few #2 filters, which is nice. Fast to clean, and you never have to worry about breaking ANOTHER glass coffee pot. Other reviewers are right, though, about needing to experiment with how much coffee to use and how hot the water is. My first cup was weak and bitter, but I've perfected it after a few tries.

I am very happy with this coffeemaker, and am able to make my one cup of coffee a day. I use natural colored #1 filters, and that makes cleanup simple. I have 3 complaints, but am happy overall.

1. The dripper continues to drip once the coffee is finished. It drips after you take the cup out (no matter how long the cup is left there) and then it even drips after I take out the used filter to throw away. So, trying to keep away the coffee stains is not really possible, and it makes this a bit messy.

2. You have to fill you coffee cup with water and then pour into the tank. It is almost impossible to do this without spilling a little water down the side of the cup, which leaves you with a wet counter. Also, leaves a little remnant water in the cup.

3. It does not fit any cup taller than the normal cup size. Sometimes I would prefer a slightly larger cup, but it will not fit the cup under the dripper, and it will not hold enough water to fill it up.

I think this product works fine as advertised, though nothing taller than a standard 12oz cup will fit.

However, I sent the first one back after only 30 days because it stopped working. Never turned on again.
Had the second one for about 8 more months. Now it stopped working. Won't turn on anymore. This replacement cost about in shipping so it wasn't FREE. So after and 9 months, no coffee maker again.

If you want to rent this model for + per year, it's fine. If you want something you don't have to buy again and again, it's not.

I've had my Two-to-Go coffee maker for five years now. I tend to brew one or two batches of coffee per day, and I have had no trouble with the on/off switch as some reviewers did. I also don't have problems with overflowing/uneven filling of coffee mugs, although I did have that happen when the machine was on an uneven surface.

I didn't know that Cuisinart recommended not putting the mugs in the dishwasher, so I used to do that all the time. Water gets inside (in the insulating layer) and leaks out if you do, but that was a minor inconvenience.

The tops stay on securely and don't leak unless the rubber o-ring is out of place. They can be a little difficult to put on though. Of course, I don't mind having to force them on because it makes me believe that the top is secure.

The simplicity of the machine also makes it really easy to clean.

Overall, I have been very pleased with the quality of the coffee brewed, and the machine pays for itself in a month of not going to a coffee shop. I definitely recommend owning this if you live by yourself. A whole pot of coffee is usually too much for one.

It brews much faster than my old coffee maker but the coffee does not taste any better than my old one made. The filter holder has a swing up handle which is convenient but rather fragile. The "insulated" cups get very hot when filled with coffee so I don't know how long the coffee will stay hot if you take it with you. I drink the coffee at home so it is used rather quickly so I don't care.

This is the only way to make truly good coffee. With the ceramic cone, you don't have to worry about boiling water reacting with plastic. Once a paper filter is placed in the cone, and the coffee grounds placed in the filter, there is just the right rate of water passing through the filter, then through the bottom of the ceramic cone to make delicious, fresh coffee with no residues of old coffee (as in automatic coffee makers), and no reaction with plastic. I have used Melitta pots for around 30 years. I have always had the plastic filter cone with the clear glass pot. The coffee always ran freely from the cone to the pot. I tried this pot because I thought it was an upgrade. I had a lot of difficulty getting the coffee to flow. The pot is visually beautiful, but I plan to send it back and go back to the pot I was using before.

The original pot arrived with a broken handle but I was promptly sent a replacement. This is a fairly crude imitation of an original Melitta coffee pot and so not for collectors but it makes perfectly good coffe without this plastic taste which comes with age to the plastic filter holders.

The advantages of ceramic or glass over plastic in terms of leeching are well known, and we are still finding out more. Thus I give this product 3 stars for making really good as well as healthier coffee, and looking stylish doing it. I have always favored the pour over method with fine grinds for excellent coffee better than any machine, closer to a huge espresso.

The drawbacks are this:
1) The coffee will not stay hot that long, at all. This makes it useless for service unless the coffee is poured right away, and less useful for tea too.
(a glass lined Zoji. will keep the coffee super hot, if you won't freak out the coffee
channels over some (gasp) plastic...)
2) These things are fragile, careful, especially with the handles.
(I got a vintage #2 lime green ceramic Melitta for a pretty penny, which I use every day.
The handle broke off easily when I dinged it with a knife.)
3) Clean it well or may stain.

All in all personally this one sits in my cupboard as I usually prefer brewing one cup into a pint glass daily. It may work well for a small family of morning coffee lovers. It is too much for 1 person, but it won't work well for get togethers or parties either.

PS For the perfect pour over cup, use a fine grind of quality small batch roasted beans, use filtered water that is *just* off boiling and pour slowly in circles around the outside, making sure to get all of the grinds wet. Yum!

For decades I've been trying to recreate at home the quality cup that you get on premise in the good coffee houses. I've used the same beans as they used. I've used the same grind. I've filtered my already-good water. I've used gold filters and non-bleached paper filters. I've had at least a half-dozen decent coffee makers. I've used lots of different press pots. I spent the summer exploring cold-brew techniques. Nothing could deliver the goods. The two variables that are the hardest to control are brewing time and temperature. In general you want a 4-5 minute brew time with 200 degree water. Apart from one highly rated, and very expensive, coffee maker--the Mocchamaster, essentially no coffee maker on the market can deliver those statistics for the home user. In fact, if you watch how long it takes the average coffee maker to get up to anywhere near the correct temperature, you'll see that they don't even come close. I was getting ready to drop down the big dollars for the very highly rated Mocchamaster series ([...]), but before pulling the trigger, I wanted to see if I could mimic the conditions using this filter and good water boiled in an electric kettle. I bought this kettle (Aroma AWK-115S 1-1/2-Liter Hot H20 X-PressWater Kettle), which has worked well. To my delight, it was successful. Cone filters and a fine grind allow for rapid extraction, and as long as you keep topping off the heat of your water as you're adding more, you can deliver the goods as tasty as "Peet's on premise"--my gold standard. Just remember to use a full 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 oz water (probably a bit more than you're used to using- but it does make a big difference). I may still get the Mocchamaster some day knowing that I'm paying for the parts of the brewing process that matter most--time and temperature, but for now, I pretty pleased with my manual solution and one less appliance.

I have two points to add about this machine:

First: It's neat! No messes to clean up in the office, no coffee grounds to dump.

Second: I like deep, rich coffee, and at first I was very disappointed. I tried using two pods, but that can lead to nasty messes. Then, I hit on the answer: use less water! I now fill the water reservoir to about 1/4 inch beneath the maximum line, and with a Senseo Sumatra blend pod, I get a satisfying cup of coffee--but only about 2/3 of a mug. I don't mind the diminished quantity; I can always make another one, and half the time I don't finish a full mug anyway. Simple, cheap, satisfying solution.

Important note to users getting watery coffee - G. Rowat - New York, NY
I've had this brewer for over a year, and for the first few weeks was intensely disappointed in the watered down coffee it was producing. On the top of the machine it says "Fill water tank with COLD water". It took me awhile to realize that THIS is the secret of the machine. Something to do with the heating of the water slows it's drip through the pod. You get a much better cup of coffee if you use water from your refrigerator. It's still not a top of the line device, but it's good for it's price if follow this tip.

I bought (and quickly discarded) the stainless steel version. See my review on it, these machines are NOT pressurized espresso/coffee makers, they are for-crap drip makers not even comparable to a "Mr. Coffee." At least Hamilton does not falsely use "Commercial" but instead hints using "Coffee and Water Dispensing"...they just leave out the one part coffee ten parts water ratio! A "zero-star" product...unless you are into colored water (hint, you can save lots by using one ounce of coffee from any real drip machine and adding water) or you are into wasting your money.

Just the right maker for my morning cup. Quick and easy.
I'm not a fan of the permanent filter for the coffee grounds, I find it messy to empty and not easy to clean.
Instead I prefer using a paper filter in the basket. Ordered some #1 filters with the maker, as mentioned in
other reviews, but they're not the only ones that fit. I'm also happy with using the commonly available #2 cone filters
in this maker. Just a fold along the edge, a fold along the bottom, and pop it in the basket. There's 1/4 inch or so of
filter over the top that can be folded back or just left alone. It's never flopped over to cause spillage or leaked grounds.
And it's a snap to dump the used filter and grounds in the trash can with no mess.
My only wish is that the base were a little taller, to be used with a variety of travel mugs. My 22oz doesn't quite fit.
Still, better than I had hoped. Get it!

Second purchase of this product. Perfect size for single coffee drinker, brew basket has self filter, brew temperature is just right. This coffeemaker travels well and brew time is very short. I purchased a second one because the net lining in the brew basket was worn from repeated washing, it lasted about 2 years. Cup fits nicely into car cup holders but the design makes it a bit tippy. The seal at the top of the cup allows water to get between the metal and plastic, it does not leak but seal should be better.

EASY TO FIND CHEAP USED-- I scored one of these at Goodwill for eight bucks. It didn't have the carafe, but I found one of those for two bucks after a few months. The carafe is extremely flimsy and broke soon by accident (which is rare-- I'm more likely to break something intentionally than by accident). Disappointing but it's not like that's the only cup in the house. Never buy a carafe new, because they're ten bucks or more in the stores and absolutely not worth it. Buy a 1-cup Pyrex instead. Same size, cheaper, and you could pound nails with it and it probably won't break.

THE WATER-CAP: The rubber gasket in the water-cap is the first problem you will probably have. Be careful not to over-tighten it too often or it could wear out (some people compulsively over-tighten things-- if nobody can open the peanut butter after you've used it, listen here); however also be certain that it's tight enough to retain the steam or it'll be shooting out the sides of the cap while your coffee is brewing. I screw on the cap until it feels kinda-snug, then give it another inch-or-so to make it tight. If it starts emitting steam when the kettle boils, make sure you're wearing at least a kitchen glove or a strong oven mitt before trying to screw the cap on tighter.

STEAM TUBE PROBLEM: If it seems like it's just not working, it's probably clogged, even if it looks totally clean. You might have to stick a toothpick in the end of it, but make sure the brew switch is not set for 'Steam' or you will burn your hand terribly. Steam burns are way worse than regular burns. If you had an unsuccessful steam attempt, and then turn it off and stick a toothpick in it, you will feel a pop of warm steam when the tube's clear but it'll just be messy and not hot. If you have sensitive hands (I'm a chef, my hands are leather), wear a kitchen glove.

PRE-HEATING THE WATER BEFORE OPENING THE VALVES: I believe you can get a better cup of espresso by having the water already-boiling before actually starting the brew cycle. Be careful about this if you do it, because you could seriously cause the thing to explode if the pressure builds too much. The instructions don't say anything about this so I suppose it's just by chance and maybe not all of them will do it. If you turn the brew-knob toward the first 'Steam' dot on the indicator, just until the light comes on (before hitting the dot), it should begin heating without opening the steam valve, so after a few minutes you will hear the kettle begin to boil, then you can turn it straight to 'Brew' and the coffee will come out in a steady drizzle more like professional espresso machines. I would only recommend doing this after you've already done it a few times by heating it on the 'Brew' setting first, so you know what it sounds like when the kettle's boiling. Stay right there and listen close, and turn on the brewer when you hear it come to a decent boil. DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM THE MACHINE WHILE IT'S HEATING IN THIS STATE. You will probably have no legal recourse against anyone if the thing explodes in your kitchen; it's more likely you will be sued. The word is 'shrapnel'. Have fun!

while i didn't know what to expect with this little number,
i wasn't put off by the price. it was so affordable.
coffee is more about the beans, not so much the maker.
but having tried it, i can give it a 5 star rating.

if the factory is looking for hints, i have two;

1 - the top, while pretty good, will leak.
i carry mine and have to watch out for any
really crazy manuevers if i have hot joe
in the vac bottle.

2 - i suggest the filter bowl be changed
to have added extension ring made to fit below
the flange where it rests on the vac bottle.
this would make it more stable.
while i haven't had it fall over or off,
i have to steady the filter bowl while
i pour the hot water through the brewing grounds.
Melitta can put me on their design team if
they wish.

I don't have much to add to what is already been said here. Great coffee fast and easy, there isn't much that can go wrong. I use it at work rather than spend nearly for a 16oz cup of "designer coffee" from the cafeteria (and I've gotten quite a few "wow, that's a neat idea" comments too). Mostly though, I wanted to address the lid issue in other reviews. Not that I doubt those experiences, but the mug I recieved seems quite solid. The lid is screwed on and has a nice silicone seal. It cannot possibly fall off or leak, unless it was not screwed down in the first place. I noticed all of the reviews compaining about the mug lid are a couple years old, so possibly the design has changed recently.

I have to concur with the (Bodum stock holder?) review above, it is a cool looking pot which should impress your friends while it lasts. The real deal is that it is not a great performer when it comes to keeping your coffee warm for any length of time. As well, mine shattered while sitting on a (wood) table, 10 minutes after brewing a pot, with no real cause. Pop, shatter, that was it. It's your money. Good luck.

Upon purchasing my new Bodum double walled drip coffee maker, I was thoroughly impressed with its ability to make coffee, keep it warm, and interest guests. After a couple weeks of careful use, I went about my daily routine. After warming up the reservoir, I poured my coffee into the warmed reservoir (via instructions as I had every time). As I was sitting at my computer, about 10 minutes after the coffee had been prepared, I was startled by a loud "pop" and spent the next 10 minutes picking up glass, not drinking coffee. Being that I got the item for around , I am not too upset, though I would be thoroughly upset had I paid retail. I would not purchase this item again. Total p.o.s. in my opinion.

I have never been one to spend a lot of money on coffeemakers in the past but I thought I would spend a little more this time and see if I could find a better quality one. I have not been disappointed. The FTXSS43 does a very good job of making a fine cup of coffee. The features I like best are the beep alert to let you know when the coffee is ready (which has a switch to turn it off if you don't want to hear it), the improved spout that doesn't drip when you pour a cup, the timer to start the coffeemaker automatically in the morning,the adjustable heat control for the warming plate, the LCD analog clock which puts out a pleasant glow and acts as a nightlight in the kitchen at night, the fact that the clock automatically turns into a timer to let you know how long the coffee has been made, and the most important, the good tasting coffee. The pot takes what I would call an average amount of time to brew and the stainless steel exterior is attractive and very easy to clean.

If you don't like your coffee hot this is perfect for you. The model I bought is FTXSS43-2, purchased at wall-mart, it has a small rectangular clock and no adjustable warming plate. Its barely warm right after brewing, no way you can burn your mouth after taking a big guzzle, after adding cold cream I need to microwave it or drink it cold. I don't add that much cream either, just a little splash. I needed to add more coffee than before because I think the lower brewing temperature is not extracting the full flavor out of the beans. I wanted to like this thing because it looks really good, but why can't they make it brew at a higher temperature? I had a Hamilton Beach brew station deluxe prior to this model and it made very hot coffee. I'm taking this useless thing back, I like hot coffee. I think I will try a Cuisinart, they get great reviews.

I've had this coffee maker since for several years now. It was an excellent coffee maker for the first year of ownership, but unfortunately it hasn't lasted as long as I would have liked.

Problem 1: From about the end of the first year, the dial to control the warming pad temperature ceased to work. It would always default to the hottest temperature no matter what setting you had it on. This lasted for about 3 months before the next problem showed up.

Problem 2: It started spilling coffee everywhere while brewing coffee each and every time. I did do the suggested "Clean" each month I've had the machine, as mentioned in the owner's manual. It was definitely inconvenient to be no more than 5 feet away from the machine while brewing at all times. This persisted for a good year and a half before it finally decided to not work period.

Maybe I was just given a faulty model. I must say I'm not going to buy this again with the amount of problems this has given me (and reading other reviews of similar models as well)

While this coffee maker has some great features and looks great on the countertop, after just 4 months it started acting up. For no reason it would turn off. Many mornings we woke up to no coffee because the timer and clock had turned off during the night. Sometimes during a brew cycle the coffee maker would just turn itself off. Sometimes right after the brew the coffee maker would turn off and we would come into the kitchen with lukewarm coffee. After just 6 months the clock and backlight both went out and a loud sounding whistle/siren came out of this unit.

For this price the coffee maker needs to go back to quality control. I did notice however, that Mr. Coffee has since improved this model with a different clock system... with no backlight. Wonder why???

UPDATE: I returned this coffeemaker to Walmart because of the defects and received the updated newer model. This coffeemaker still has the same sleek design that still looks great on my countertop and compliments my other stainless steel appliances.

So far we haven't had any problems. Clock has been working fine and the unit no longer turns off unexpectedly. However, the clock has changed. The previous analog clock is now digital. And it has no backlight. I contacted Mr. Coffee to inquire as to whether this was a defect. They stated it did not have a backlight. It's very hard to see the time unless you are right on top of it. Otherwise you see just the standard digits of "1888". Having no backlight does take away from the look.

The temperature control for the warming plate is no longer an option. That was a rather nice feature from the previous model. We haven't had any problems with lukewarm coffee so the temperature seems to be adequate.

With these two noticeable changes, I feel the price is too high. Paid in the low 's at Walmart. When you take features away, one would think cost of manufacturing would decrease, and therefore cost to consumer would decrease. Not so!

I started having trouble finding my favorite Senseo pod, Sumatra locally. I did not want to spend even more money with shipping online. I couldn't find another pod strong enough to make an 8oz mug with one pod so I thought I would get my own beans, grind them and make my own pods. The first try was ecopad. Horrible - way too messy to empty and an awful awful tasting result. Then I got the Melitta pods with flaps. Not bad but could only get enough coffee in them for tiny cup. Then I bought the perfect pod sealer on an auction site and am very very pleased. I hope they stay in business for long time.

You can fill them up with enough coffee for a real mug. I haven't had any leaking problems and only one pod that failed to seal all the way around (still able to use it, I just folded it over a bit).

The first few times it did make an awful stink when it heated up but this is absolutely normal with heating appliances. After 4 sessions of pod making it is practically gone. I don't make a hundred pods ahead of time. I grind enough and make pods for maybe a week tops. I only drink one cup (big cup) of coffee a day, in the morning. So the cost isn't too much of a burden, still cheaper than buying Senseo pods over the web and paying shipping.

The replacement pods are getting a little difficult to get. Some previous outlets for these are saying there are quality control and delivery problems on the part of mfr and a coffee website I frequent thoroughly trashed the product's inventor. I am sorry but I think it is a great little invention and I hope they get back on track, my machine lasts a long time and there is a never ending supply of pods. I laid in a few extras for now. Hopefully this product is in it for the long haul. It is a good one!

This device is perfect until it stops working. It actually worked for approximately 6 months and then it stopped warming up. I called the site we bought it from and a very nice guy told me that I had to email him (he provided his email address) so he could ship me a replacement. I did what he asked me to and never heard from him since. I tried to call again and just got a recording, I left a few messages and then gave up. I assume I "accidentally" reached a live person the first time. I think it's a waste of money, and I don't want to spend another for another 6 months. The heating element in this device is very weak. I agree with most of the reviews that if it works it works only for about 6 months.

I bought this product because they are no longer selling a good selection of these pods in the stores and I haven't seen a senseo coffee pot or products on any store shelf for a bit. So I figured this way I could make all kinds of flavors and not have to get rid of my Juan Valdex pod coffee brewer I love so much. This worked perfectly. I have already made over 200 pods and it works flawlessly everytime! I would definately recommend this product to anyone with the pod machines that are not selling anymore who would like to continue to enjoy using theirs.

I have a senseo coffee maker which I am extremely happy with. I needed this pod maker because I don't like senseo's coffee, so making my own pods was ideal. I've just ordered by 3rd pod maker..not because they're so great, but because my first two just stopped working. My 1st one lasted about a yr and a half. When I ordered my 2nd one, it actually came to me broken and had to be replaced by amazon. When another one arrived, it worked great....for 10 months. Now I have to buy a new one again because it just stopped working one day. These pod makers are not quality products. I am very frustrated by the company who makes them. When I tried to email them, there was no response.

I don't abuse these things. I make several pods about twice a week. I would think that for the price, the unit would last a lot longer than a year or so. If I had an alternative, I would stop buying these damn pod makers. In fact, once I run out of my pod refills, I don't intend to get any more. I just hope that this 3rd pod maker I just ordered last long enough to get me thru the pod refills that I already have. So-warning, don't buy bulk pod refills cuz your pod maker probably won't last very long.

I have had my Melitta MEMB1 for 5 plus years (latch on lid broken in first 4 months). It isn't what I'd call an exhibit appliance, it is well used and loved and does show it's wear. I use autoclave tape to hold down the lid to the grinder compartment. It withstands the steam and holds the lid down long enough to mill the beans and brew. I probably change the tape strip every 2 weeks or so. In spite of this cosmetic hiccup, I refuse to toss it. I also find it doesn't fit well under my kitchen cabinets and I have to slide it forward to load and clean it. I bought a black piece of felt (.29 cents) and cut it to the shape of the footprint to make this virtually a non-issue. I have looked for parts, but even Gormet Depot doesn't carry any for this model. I can't find a new replacement either. I'll stick with this one for now even if I have to tape the entire machine together. Oh and the filter is not to be placed in the dishwasher. I remove the build up on the screen with a soak in vinegar water and scalding tap water. If you must, a soft bristle infant tooth brush is gentle enough, too.

Great coffee, but... - Coffe drinker -
We had two of these units, and both made great coffee, but...
The latch does break, and you end up holding it down with a weight in order to make coffee. Also, the temperature tends to be be toward the warm side, as opposed to hot.
These problems should be easy to fix, and obviously they are very common, as seen from other reviews.
As a result, I am now looking for a non Melitta coffeemaker with great coffee and fewer problems.

We had the Cusinart and found it hard to clean, loud, and in the end, unreliable (bad electronics build quality - cold solder joints - caused the whole thing to die after about 18 mos). In contrast, we are quite pleased with this unit overall. It's comparatively quiet, is easy to clean, operates well even when the grinder is wet (unlike the Cuisinart which has to be perfectly dry or the grind gets stuck in the grinder and never makes it to the basket), and seems reliable. The only complaint we have is that the keep-warm timer is hard wired to stay on for just one hour. This is OK on a busy work morning, but on a weekend where we make 8-10 cups and then spend the morning drinking, it's an inconvenience. Now we've gotten used to resetting the power every time we take a cup, but we still wish you could program the keep warm time like on the Cuisinart. Bottom line: strongly recommended over other G&Bs.

This is my 4th pod coffee maker. The first two were Black & Decker Home Cafes. Although they were my favorite as far as features, both quit working within a few months. I tried a Cuisinart and was disappointed in lack of features and it was actually a drip coffee maker instead of using a steam pump. It made coffee that was 'okay' at best. This Melitta uses steam and gives the choice of cup sizes up to 14 oz. The Melitta makes a very nice cup of coffee, even using other makers' pods, but it can't use the capucchino pods made for the B&D Home Cafe. Too bad since I have 2 bags of those pods left over. The auto turnoff doesn't work as mentioned in other reviews but no big deal, I just manually turn it off after using it. Over all, the Melitta is fast, convenient,makes great coffee, and I love the 2 separate cup feature for when I have a guest. If it lasts longer than the B&D Home Cafe I will be very happy with it. Warning: I also bought the eco pods but they do not fit the Melitta or the Cuisinart, just Senseo coffee makers.

My 3rd pod maker, and so far, the best. Had the 1st generation Melitta and was not impressed. Then got the SimpleHuman pod maker, which I really liked, but it started leaking like crazy after about a year. This new Melitta is very nice. Well built and has more brewing options than others I have seen. Can choose from 3 brewing sizes: 5oz, 8oz, or 14 oz. Dual brewing spout allows you to make 2 cups at once if you like. Also, this is the only brewer so far where the brewing spout is high up enough to fit a travel mug underneath. And most important, coffee tastes great! Only flaw is that it does not sit perfectly square on it's four bottom pads. Rocks a bit, but it is a minor inconvenience. Had mine for almost 3 months, and am very happy!

I replaced my Senseo with this Melitta and loved it... the flexibility to fill a full size travel mug (14oz) was great and it worked fine for a while, but started to get hard to engage the plastic lever and locking system properly. I tried using a food grade lubricant to no avail. The plastic handle finally broke off completely leaving the unit useless. Don't know what I'll replace it with....maybe another melitta and hope for better luck.

I have been looking for a coffee pot to replace our old one for awhile now. Didn't want to spend alot but wanted coffee fast. I didn't want the clock and other settings and that was hard to find. Very simple. You swich the top from brew to fill, add water, put the pot back in and switch it back to brew. Gravity does the rest. It is very fast. The coffee comes out so hot that we don't even turn on the warmer for the morning pot. The only thing to consider is that it is a very tall coffee maker. You have to pull it out to add water and with the reservoir, the maker can be very heavy. This was resolved with felt feet. Would I buy it again even at a higher price......most certainly.

I rec'd this on May 7th '08 and it stopped working on May 18th '08. I think the thermastat is stuck, because it won't quit heating. The water is at a constant boil. Wouldn't buy this product again.

This makes far better coffee than my old Gevalia coffeemaker (the freebie they send when you sign up for their mail-order club.) I'm able to control the temperature of the water which I believe is the most important factor in making a great cup of joe. I pour the water in at just under boiling and keep the kettle on the heat while I'm brewing so that when I add more water it is the correct temperature -- I try to maintain about 205degrees throughout. It's simple and it works. It'd be perfect if the glass carafe were replaced with a thermal carafe, with a small 'window' for checking water level. However, thermal carafes are widely available (I use the one that came with my Gevalia coffeemaker) so this is a minor complaint. Outside of a French Press, this makes the best-tasting coffee of any method I've tried (I haven't tried cold brew yet, but have done percolators, auto-drip, press, and vacuum.) Another small complaint is that the instructions are a little vague -- if you really want to make a great cup of coffee, experiment with the amount of coffee (should be about 2t per cup), grind (I use fine with the manual drip) and water temperature (about 200-210) and, of course, bean and roast (I like a moderate to light roast - as unhip as that sounds, I believe the coffee flavor is more complex and, well, tasty, with these roasts.) Highly recommended.

I don't think I need to waste time letting you know how great this Melitta maker is. Obviously, many other reviewers have already said just about all that can be said. My only disapointment is that it does not come with a stove-top element grid, that little metal thingy that goes on the stove top element so that the glass carafe doesn't touch the burner directly thus prolonging the life of the pot. I see to purchase a grid individually is expensive for a small piece of metal! I think that I will go to the dollar store to find one or use a metal hanger and make my own. I can't see spending .00 to .00 then add the shipping to that amount for a totoal of about .00. or more for something that probably costs less than .00 to manufacture. I do love the Melitta Pot, best coffee ever!

We've used one of these for years and love the simplicity and the quality of the coffee. I was quite upset when we left our last one behind while on vacation, but found them for sale here on Amazon. The biggest problem with them is finding the No. 6 filters if you need to make more than a couple of cups - they are almost impossible to find in any of our local stores. You can find the No. 4 filters, which will do two large cups, but that is all. If you come across the No. 6 size, you had better stock up.
